I asked Kelly to email me their story to make the blog post extra special – I am really glad I did, because I got back a beautiful love story.
From Kelly’s perspective:
So we met on the 13th November 2000 down at the Harbour Festival. I cannot tell you much about that day because to be honest I don’t even remember seeing him! I was hanging out with Tarryn (my new-found friend) and I didn’t even notice her nerdy older brother in the background. It wasn’t until the Monday after, when Tarryn handed me a mysterious letter, that I started to take notice. The letter was the start of it all for me. We wrote each other letters for most of our school years and even now we write each other letters when we have something special we want to say. I could see from what he had written in that first fateful letter that he was really nervous and I thank God that he had the courage to write it because it was the timid way he said that “He wanted to get to know me more” that made me write back. And so it went on, back and forth, back and forth, with poor Tarryn as the delivery system! (Thank you Tarryn for being so obliging!)
To tell you the truth I don’t even remember our first date (though with my memory it’s not surprising!), I can tell you though that we were each other’s first kiss! The first memory I have of going out with him was when we went to his Grade 10 dance at Port Rex.
I can’t remember when we officially started dating but we just counted from that first letter he sent me.
For some reason Clyde and I just worked and while my friends were happy living the single life, I was happy just to have this one guy to spend my time with. There was just something about his personality that kept me interested.
Not everything was all butterflies and fireworks though! We had our fair share of fights and broke up often, but it wouldn’t normally last past a week when we couldn’t help but apologise just so we could see each other again!
In grade 11 we had the big break up and started dating other people. We didn’t stop seeing each other though, obviously with Tarryn as a common thread we saw each other every now and then and we were quite civil! At the end of the year I was growing tired of my long-distance relationship and Clyde had ended his and suddenly we started taking more notice of each other!
It was only after he got his hair cut into a mowhawk (by some guys in college) that things happened! I couldn’t believe that this crazy, party-animal was the same guy but it was soon evident that under the new, confident exterior was still the romantic, nervous, nerdy guy I had fallen in love with! And so our relationship started up again!
And so that marks the end of all the break ups! Since then we have happily been together, I have seen him graduate and get his first job, I have seen him through some tough decisions and many, many happy times. On the 20th August 2010 he (finally) proposed and in February 2011 we moved into our beautiful home together.
I cannot even begin to tell you how grateful I am that God chose for Clyde and I to meet so young. I got the chance to watch him grow up, to watch him change both inside and out into the amazing, deep and loving man he is today. It is amazing because I can remember when I was young thinking Wow, how can I love someone so much already? But every year, without fail, my love grows stronger and stronger, and every day I am amazed by the depth and breadth of this love that I hold, that my heart doesn’t feel big enough to hold, that goes right down into my soul and deep into my history.
From Clyde’s perspective:
The first time I saw Kelly was at the harbour festival many years back when I was an impressionable youth, I remembered this moment quite clearly, I was sitting with my cousin reading a comic, when my sister walked past with the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. I realized I was reading a comic so I tossed it and tried my hardest to look cool, and from that day I knew that Kelly was someone special.
There are a lot of memories I could talk about, but Four Seasons holds a special place in our hearts, we spent a lot of time out there getting to know each other, taking long walks and spending late nights on the beach staring at the stars talking about our future together.
We have had our fair share of bad times, and times apart, but deep down I knew that I would end up with Kelly, I have never known a more incredible women in all my life, and I don’t think I ever will. She has and will always be on my mind, and as long as my heart is beating I’ll never stop loving her.
How we got engaged:
Poor Clyde! So, apparently Clyde’s first choice was to whisk me away to Hogsback to propose. Unfortunately everytime he enquired about my weekend I had something on (it was netball season and my first year of teaching so I was pretty busy!). Eventually we decided to go out to Four Seasons for a night on our own away from everything. So he figured it would be the perfect time, he could take me down to the beach where we had spent many a Summer together and ask me there. Well we got to Four Seasons and he made me supper (which isnt unusual so I didnt even suspect anything) and he lit a fire and we sat for a while and chatted. Little did I know that Clyde was eyeing out the gale force winds outside and waiting for them to die down so he could take me to the beach. Well eventually he gave up on that idea because I was getting sleepy and the wind was still howling. He ended up proposing to me next to the fire! I really and truly was surprised and I cant even remember what he said but I said yes and after staring at my ring for a while and phoning our parents we went and sat in the car (the only place you get signal!) and made it official by posting it on Facebook!
